Urban Geothermal

Harvesting geothermal energy has been proven to be a reliable clean source of energy in some applications. But typical geothermal systems require digging deep into the ground, or being located near a body of water, something that is often not practical in a dense urban environment. Fortunately, drain water can act as a geothermal ground source that is accessible and reliable in many multifamily buildings. When installed in this configuration, the ecodrain can be used to augment space heating and cooling, and can be combined with a heat pump to provide even greater savings.

Tempering drain water

In many municipalities, drain water must be cooled to below 140F prior to entering the sewer system. Hotter drain water, such as at the exit of a dishwasher, can damages pipes. The current solution is to mix cold fresh water with the hot drain water to lower its temperature below the maximum. But this solution wastes water and energy. A better solution is to use ecodrain to cool the drain water, and at the same time preheat cold fresh water for later use.

Office Buildings

Office buildings typically use a lot of cold water for bathrooms. Office buildings also use a lot of air conditioning in the summer. Since heat always naturally travels from hot to cold, air conditioners consume a lot of energy because they pump hot inside air into the even hotter outside air, against its natural tendencies. A more natural way to cool is to transfer heat from the hot air into cooler water. Cooling air using fresh water is not allowed in most buildings because it wastes water. However, cool drain water can provide the same low cost cooling, without wasting any water. Dumping heat from your building into cold drain water is more efficient than dumping it into hot air.

In a hair salon, it pays to be green. According to Green Cirlce Salons, the average salon produces 821.76 kg of waste every year. Every time hair is washed with warm water in a salon, energy and money go to waste.

Data centers located in office buildings can use cool drain water to pre-cool water in a closed loop chilled water system.
